Marijuana Activists Call On President Obama To Pardon Canadian Pot Prisoner

By: Sensible Washington

Seattle area marijuana activists will gather outside the Federal Courthouse at 700 Stewart Street on Friday, September 10, to protest the sentencing of Marc Emery, the so-called Prince of Pot, who faces five years in federal prison for selling marijuana seeds by mail order to Americans and to call on President Barack Obama to pardon him. The controversial Canadian faced federal charges after DEA agents entered Canada and arrested Emery in 2005. Emery is expected to be sentenced to five years in federal prison under a plea agreement reached with federal prosecutors.

“The Emery case is a prime example of the overreach of the federal government and the need for marijuana laws that match social reality in America,” said Philip Dawdy, Sensible Washington’s co-founder and vice-chair. “It’s crazy that he’s going to prison for selling seeds and that the federal government is willing to spend millions of dollars prosecuting and imprisoning him. President Obama should pardon Emery and get busy with reforming America’s outdated marijuana laws.”

Activists rally for 'Prince of Pot' at federal courthouse

Did you notice the protesters outside Seattle's federal courthouse? They're calling on President Barack Obama to free marijuana activist Marc Emery, who will be sentenced Friday.

Emery, known in Canada as the "Prince of Pot," is facing five years in U.S. prison for selling marijuana seeds through the mail. He'll be sentenced at 1:30 p.m.

"It's crazy that he's going to prison for selling seeds, and that the federal government is willing to spend millions of dollars prosecuting and imprisoning him," the group Sensible Washington said in a statement. "President Obama should pardon Emery and get busy with reforming America's outdated marijuana laws."

Sentencing Friday for Prince of Pot

By QMI Agency / Toronto Sun

Canada's Prince of Pot is facing five years in a U.S. prison and will be sentenced Friday in Seattle.

Marc Emery, 52, who lived in Vancouver, B.C., and is a native of London, Ont., is a pot advocate and was extradited to the U.S. in May after he was charged with selling marijuana seeds through the mail.

The five-year deal is part of a plea deal between Emery and U.S. authorities.

In a blog post on his website, freemarc.ca, Emery wrote that one of the best things about sentencing will be his transfer application, which would move him to a Canadian prison.

A notable defector in the war on pot

By: Chris Selley, National Post

If someone were to assemble a world ranking of unjustly imprisoned people, and if he were to put Marc Emery anywhere near the top, I would not be sympathetic. Canada's so-called "prince of pot," scheduled to be sentenced today in Seattle to a stiff five years in prison (that's the sentence he plea-bargained to!) flagrantly violated the law. Wanting to smoke and sell pot isn't like being gay in Iran: It's something you can easily avoid, even though you shouldn't have to. However asinine, the law's the law. Like alcohol, which is legal -- and very much unlike tobacco, which is also legal -- marijuana is no better than harmless. We should all have the right to partake of our drug of choice, but on a spectrum of rights worth fighting, going to prison or dying for, it's not likely to win you a Nobel.

'Prince of Pot' ready to be sentenced

By: Jill Drews, News 1130

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The 'Prince of Pot' makes his last step toward a federal prison tomorrow. Marc Emery will be sentenced in a Seattle court room.

Emery has already signed a plea deal, meaning he will likely serve a five-year federal term for selling marijuana seeds to American customers. His wife Jody says she is worried. She's relatively close to her husband now, but he could end up in a number of American cities once the deal is done. "Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Georgia, Texas, North Carolina and California. We're hoping he gets sent to California, but it's whatever the Bureau of Prisons decides."

"Prince of Pot" Mark Emery faces sentencing today in Seattle

By: Linda Solomon, Vancouver Observer

After a long extradition fight that ended earlier this year, Mark Emery is finally going to prison, news reports say.

Observers expect Emery to receive a five year prison term.

Emery's legal team essentially agreed to this in a plea bargain earlier in the year and Emery is expected to pull out of the agreement if the judge tries to impose a longer term.

"It has always been my sincere belief that the prohibitions on cannabis are hurtful to U.S. and Canadian citizens and are contrary to the constitutions of both countries," the 52-year-old wrote in the Sept. 1 letter.

Prince of Pot set to be sentenced on Friday

By: JEFF HODSON, Metro News Vancouver

Marijuana activist Marc Emery is expected to be sentenced in a Seattle court early Friday afternoon.

Emery has been held in a maximum-security pretrial facility since May 24 when he pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to manufacture marijuana. He is expected to receive five years in a federal prison, the term agreed upon in his plea bargain.

There is a possibility, explained Marc’s wife Jodie Emery, that the judge could award a sentence of more or less than five years — nullifying the plea agreement and opening the door for either the prosecution or defence to take Emery’s charge to trial.

'Prince of Pot' prepares for prison, calls prosecution 'political'

By LEVI PULKKINEN, Seatlle Post-Intelligencer

Marc Emery -- "Prince of Pot," purported political prisoner and shameless self-promoter -- will soon become Marc Emery, prison inmate.

When he faces a federal judge Friday in a Seattle courtroom, the Canadian marijuana seed dealer will almost certainly be sentenced to a five-year term in federal prison.

A plea agreement inked earlier this year to end the five-year-old prosecution guarantees as much. Should U.S. District Court Judge Ricardo Martinez impose another sentence, either Emery or the prosecution could pull out of the deal.
