Get Involved! Help Defeat Prohibition

We need to get a lot of work done to legalize marijuana, here's some ways to help!

Get active helping build activism in Canada!

May 7, 2011 is the Global Marijuana March, and of course there is always 4/20 (April 20) and Cannabis Day, July 1. We need organizers working across Canada on these and other events.

Send that link out over Facebook and Twitter, encourage your friends to sign up! WhyProhibition.ca will is the basis for a number of important campaigns, including a new BC referendum to legalize Marijuana. We need people to register so they can find out about upcoming protests, rallies, and laws.

We need bloggers, researchers, newshawks, and activists to get posting! You can use the userblogs section to post blogs, news, upload files (especially pamphlets, we're looking to host as many drug policy pamphlets as we can find!)

One of the most important things you can do is get involved in your local community. Join other activist groups, volunteer at soup kitchens, march in local parades. When we get involved, not only do we reach out to potential allies, but we also represent the best of our community to people who may be unfamiliar with it. If you're unsure about a group, attend some meetings and see if they're amenable to drug policy reform.

WhyProhibition.ca - Update from Jacob Hunter

It's been a very busy couple of weeks, so there haven't been enough regular updates to the website. Thanks to the kind donation of a 3G internet stick by the Cannabis Dispensary Society, I will now be able to update WhyProhibition.ca from the road, and from inside Conservative MP offices.

For those of you who haven't seen it, we have been staging Sit-ins across Canada as part of the Free Marc Emery campaign. While not directly a project of WhyProhibition.ca, the Free Marc Emery campaign obviously has a lot of cross-over with what we do.

Stop S-10!
In addition to helping with the Free Marc Emery campaign, we are working hard to battle S-10, Stephen Harper's new mandatory minimum sentencing bill. We need a lot of help to get people out and active to stop S-10! On June 4, assemble at your local Member of Parliament's office and hold a protest outside. If they're Conservative, they let people know how the Conservative party is going to have to raise taxes to pay for S-10. Read more »

New WhyProhibition.ca Theme

By. Jacob Hunter

Welcome to the new WhyProhibition.ca theme! We are still working out a few issues, but have decided to go live to the world. We have seperated out topics like Marijuana, C-15, Prostitution and Harm Reduction into their own menu, making it easier to navigate to your favorite topics. We have also simplified the interface and will continue to work to make the site even easier to use. Check out the new events interface, it's much easier to use and allows you to invite all of your contacts (hotmail, gmail, yahoo) to your event!

WhyProhibition.ca - Last Night's Downtime

By. Jacob Hunter
As many of you may have noticed, WhyProhibition.ca was down for about 12 hours last night. This was caused by a DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack aimed at the server we're hosted on. As a result, CannabisCulture.com, Pot.tv, EndProhibition.ca and SmartChange.ca were all affected.

The individual responsible has been identified, and is unlikely to repeat the attack. That being said, we are currently looking at ways to prevent this from happening in the future, though we believe this is an isolated incident.

We are ironing out the last few bugs in a new WhyProhibition.ca theme, so get ready for a more streamlined interface to all our features! And don't forget to upload a user picture, as these will be displayed much more prominently in the new theme (see below).

Also, the MP Identification software is being upgraded to deal with some false identification and to auto-apply to new members of signup. Going forward, expect a lot of changes based on your location, your representatives and the rallies and events closest to you! Read more »

Canada's Online Town Hall Dominated by calls for Marijuana Legalization

By. Jacob Hunter, Policy Director, Beyond Prohibition Foundation

Last Tuesday, Stephen Harper and Google launched “Talk Canada” an online town hall in which Canadians were asked to submit questions to the Prime Minister. Much to the Prime Minister's chagrin, the questions which dominated the voting demanded the legalization of marijuana.

“According to recent polls, marijuana legalization has almost double the support of the current Conservative government”, said Jacob Hunter, Policy Director of the Beyond Prohibition Foundation, “Despite this, the Conservative government is pushing for mandatory minimum sentences of 6 months for growing a single marijuana plant; it should be no wonder Canadians are frustrated”

Back to School Activism time!

It's September, and this is a great time to get active and get involved in any kind of activism! In Canada, we have Parliament resuming, a possible federal election and a mandatory minimums bill that's weeks away from passing into law. We need to get active more than ever, so, here's how!

Group Formation/Participation:

I have mentioned it before, but one of the most effective ways of being active is by joining and working with what are refered to as “Civil Society Groups” or “Non-Governmental Organizations”. Examples of these kinds of groups range from Churches, Unions, Professional Organizations to groups like Habitat for Humanity, United Way, Sierra Club or Greenpeace.

This is helpful for a number of reasons:

-Gives you a chance to network with other politically active and influential individuals in your community
-Gives you a chance to influence people in your community
-Gives you a chance to build experience in community organizing Read more »

WhyProhibition Handbill Color Version

Museum-Mouse of the House of Mouse colourized the WhyProhibition pamphlet! It's beautiful, but be warned, these are about 10x as expensive to print. (10c/handbill instead of about 1c/handbill)

New WhyProhibition Handbill - Remember Prohibtion

Here is another version of the WhyProhibition.ca handbill, this one with the NORML Remember Prohibition image on the front (Thanks NORML Foundation!)
