Parliament to resume June 2 - Omnibus Crime Bill set for Fall

Canada’s new crop of MPs will arrive in Ottawa June 2 to tackle the economy, a new budget — and face two contentious issues that could spoil the election honeymoon for the Conservative government.

Stephen Harper’s Conservatives could face tough questions with potential bombshell disclosures on Canada’s treatment of Afghan detainees and his government’s billion-dollar spending spree on last summer’s G8 and G20 summits.

Reports on both topics were delayed by the election but on June 7 — just five days after Parliament resumes — the Auditor General office is expected to table the findings of its investigation into the summit spending.

Draft findings leaked during the election concluded that the Harper government misinformed Parliament, and skirted legal guidelines to approve the flow of $50 million into the G8 Legacy Infrastructure Fund into the Muskoka riding held by cabinet minister Tony Clement. Read more »
