Canada's 2011 Election: As the Smoke Clears

By. Jeremiah Vandermeer, Cannabis Culture

Stephen Harper and the Conservatives have secured their coveted majority government in a stunning election-day sweep. Dark days are undoubtedly ahead for Canada's cannabis culture, but the fight is not over.

As the smoke cleared on the evening of May 2, it was all too evident that our worst fears had been realized: Harper and his marijuana-hating Conservative Party had won more than enough seats – 167 of the 308 in Parliament – to form a strong majority. Add that up with a stacked Senate, a quickly-changing judicial landscape, and a cowardly, ineffectual media and you have – in essence – a Conservative dictatorship.

Harper, an Evangelical Christian who harbors religion-inspired hostilities toward marijuana, has promised to pass all of his party's dangerous law-and-order bills together within the first hundred days of his majority rule. This includes legislation that would enact mandatory minimum prison sentences for non-violent marijuana offences, like growing just a few plants in your own home or sharing baked cannabis treats. The enforcement of new laws is sure to lead to a massive and expensive expansion of the prison system, with Conservative-friendly corporations there to build, maintain, and make big profits – with no regard for the pain and suffering of non-violent Canadians. Canada's War on Marijuana Expanding on All Fronts

Jeremiah Vandermeer

Canada is escalating its war on cannabis and the casualties are piling up on several fronts across the nation.

It seems like it was just a few years ago that Canadian marijuana users were feeling hopeful about the future of the country's drug laws. The turn of the century ushered in significant reform to Canada's medical marijuana laws, allowing patients access to cannabis through a federal medical licensing program. In 2002, after interviewing hundreds of experts and studying the issue for two years, the Senate of Canada recommended that marijuana be completely legalized. Activist entrepreneur Marc Emery sold cannabis seeds openly and toured the country during the "Summer of Legalization". And a Liberal Prime Minister promised country-wide decriminalization of marijuana, but half-jokingly cautioned, "don't start to smoke yet". Read more »

Cannabinoid Studies Released

The state-funded California Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research announced that its studies have shown marijuana to have therapeutic value in a report released on February 17.

The ten-year, $8.7-million medical marijuana research program, established at the University of California in 2000, reported positive results in six different human clinical trials regarding chronic pain, spasticity and vaporization.

Four of the CMCR studies found cannabis effective in treating painful HIV neuropathy, (Ellis, 2009), neuropathic pain (Wilsey, 2008) and migraine headaches (Meng, 2003); and as a "modest analgesia" in capsaicin-induced pain (Wallace, 2007).

North America Lights Up For 4/20

Pot smokers sparked joints across Canada and the US yesterday for 4/20, the international day to celebrate marijuana.

In Vancouver, home of Cannabis Culture Magazine and Prince of Pot Marc Emery, the day was a smoking success. Thousands of people gathered downtown at the Art Gallery to get high on great music, rousing political speeches, and every strain of marijuana you can imagine - as well as budder, hash, and a wide selection of cannabis-infused goodies.

Activists handed out hundreds of prohibition-reform pamphlets and information on legalizing marijuana. BC Green Party candidate and CC Editor Jodie Emery gave a spirited speech and demanded an end to drug prohibition. Read more »

What Happened To Whizzinator?

by Peter Gorman, Cannabis Culture

The biggest urine-test assistance company in North America was recently shut down and its owners arrested after a lengthy government investigation by a well-known anti-marijuana prosecutor.

Operation True Test, a two-year investigation by the United States Department of Justice into products that help people pass drug tests, culminated in federal raids on nine locations around the US on May 7, 2008. The raid targets included Puck Technology, an Internet company based in Signal Hill, CA that made products such as The Whizzinator, a prosthetic penis that delivers synthetic urine to tiny plastic testing cups. Pot As Economic Medicine?

by Aleksandar Lescan, The Voice

As world leaders scramble for ways to resurrect the dwindling economy, it seems that even marijuana is not being ruled out as a possible economic stimulus.

American citizens proposed legalizing marijuana to U.S. President Barack Obama as an economic solution in his first online town hall meeting, which he held last week.

“I don’t think that is a good strategy to grow our economy,” Obama replied.

That opinion was not shared by some Canadian politicians.
Martin Keith, the Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca MP introduced a bill in the House of Commons yesterday to decriminalize the possession of marijuana.

“The war on drugs has been a complete failure,” he said.

The Conservative Party of Canada could not be reached to comment on its drug policy. The government’s current position is that marijuana is illegal except for those who have a doctor’s recommendation. Read more »
